Fish Fingers and Custard - Issue 15 - OUT NOW!

If we were a little bit sexist, then we'll say that waiting for a new Issue of Fish Fingers and Custard is like waiting for the right woman , who will turn up fashionably late. So, just imagine that woman turns up 3 months late? You're not bothered, because she's great, she's different . Beautiful, funny, masterful , if you will. What a woman .  Well, we're nothing like that, apart from being 3 months late, we contain the same-old love and spelling mistakes that you've come to expect. Anyway, here are the details of how to buy the new issue, which has got nothing to do with Series 8, despite the rubbish I've just written above: *PLEASE NOTE THIS ISSUE IS NOW SOLD OUT* For a finely-printed, but adequately put-together paper copy of the fanzine, the prices are as follows: UK - £2 Rest of the World - £4.50 To order a copy, please send the payment that applies to you, via PayPal to fishcustardfanzine@googlemail.com (please mark your paymen...

Issue 15 Update

We're well into production of the brand new Issue here at the Fish Custard office (we've had a delivery of tea and biscuits) but we're still looking for more contributions from Doctor Who fans to give their views on the anniversary and/or the Matt Smith era as an whole. We have no word count, or any guidelines for you to abide by (as long as you keep it sensible!) If that doesn't float you boat (which it technically won't) we're also looking for your view on the casting of Peter Capaldi and what future Doctor Who has got to look forward to. We'd also welcome any art or spoofs you can come up with, too! And if you can lend us £5000, that'll also be acceptable. Joking* Please e-mail fishcustardfanzine@googlemail.com and one of our team of bores will get back to you. The deadline is the 28th February Cheers! *Not really

Contribute To The First Issue of 2014!

We're tentatively stepping out, like a drunken woman outside a nightclub with no shoes on at 5am, to announce that we're back from our self-imposed sabbatical and are ready for another new Issue. But like the aforementioned lady, let's call her Fanny, we need a taxi to get her home - and less wet than she already is. It's raining. We want YOU to be that taxi driver and to contribute to help to get Fanny home. In other words, we're after contributions for the new Issue. For this Issue we're looking for the following written works: The Anniversary - what you did/how you watched the 50th Anniversary story The Time of The Doctor - Your review of Matt Smith's swansong as The Doctor The Matt Smith era - what you enjoyed/what you disliked/how the show will move forward Peter Capaldi - your take on the casting and his appearance in The Time of The Doctor OR...anything else you can think of. As long as it's Doctor Who-related If you'd like to get...

Issue 15 - THE ANNIVERSARY ONE - Contribution Details

Image
Everyone thinks that the Anniversary of Doctor Who is over...but it isn't! The 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who is just starting! To celebrate this, we're producing (what we hope!) will be our biggest and best Issue ever. As always, we need contributions from you. For this Issue we're looking for essays/reports on the 50th Anniversary, amazingly enough! We want to know what YOU did for the big day, what you thought, what you felt etc Whether you watched it at home, saw it at a cinema, went to a party...anything! Also, we're after your reviews of the actual episode (positive - or negative). If all of that doesn't take your fancy, you can write about what you think of 50 years of Doctor Who and what it means to you. Please e-mail us at fishcustardfanzine@googlemail.com with whatever you like! Please note that the deadline is 7th December Cheers!

Happy 50th Birthday Doctor Who!

Image
" Susan and I are cut off from our own planet, without friends or protection. But one day we shall get back. Yes, one day. One day. " What can you say about a television programme that has kept generations of people happy for 50 years? It has - and will continue to - inspire and entertain many more in the next 50 years and for that reason alone, Doctor Who has proven to be the best television programme of all time. Let's raise a glass to everyone who has worked on the programme. Thank-you Doctor Who. The world would be an infinitely duller place without you. Have a great day, however you're celebrating!  We're looking for contributions for our next Issue, so if you fancy telling us about what you did today, how and where you watched the episode, what you did to celebrate the Anniversary, please e-mail us at fishcustardfanzine@googlemail.com (After today, obviously!)

The Randomiser - 50 Years of Doctor Who Stories - Part 5

Image
The final day of our journey. Here are three stories from the three Doctors of the 2000’s. Expect scares, laughter and a bit of wood. The Unquiet Dead It’s arrived! Doctor Who has arrived! That was the thing most people took away in 2005 after The Unquiet Dead first aired.   Yes, Rose and The End of The World were okay, but this episode really forced Doctor Who, and what it was about, home to millions of new viewers.   I should know, I was one of them. It’s funny, whilst watching this again, I thought back to that first series and think about how average some of the episodes were.   I think if the same episodes were aired during Series 2 or 3 they wouldn’t have gone down as well, but despite that first series being chaotic from a production point of view, it was all new, so it’s still held in high esteem.   For me though, The Unquiet Dead , along with a few others from Series 1, will go down as a bone-fide ‘new series classic’.   The story ...

We're back with another Issue of views, reviews and loads of waffle. With the 50th Anniversary just a matter of weeks away, this Issue provides all Doctor Who fans with a somewhat silly companion piece for the present time. In this Issue: Reviews of the latest Doctor Who episodes Thanks Matt Smith - we say goodbye to Doctor #11 Cyberman No3 - with a Five Doctors twist Review of the Doctor Who Proms (or 'Prom' if you're being pedantic) Peter Capaldi - our take on the casting Plus Much More Prices (includes P+P) UK: £2 Rest of the World: £4 You can order a copy of this mediocre printed mag by sending the payment that applies to you, via PayPal, to fishcustardfanzine@googlemail.com and please mark your payment as 'family or friends', we're neither, but if you buy a fanzine, we'll be your friend for life. Oh and make sure you include your name and address too, so we can send you your mag. We won't stalk you or anything. Not if you do...

Thanks Matt - and Goodbye!

I don’t think the word ‘shock’ is the right word to use to describe Matt Smith’s exit as The Doctor - we’ve been hearing rumours for the past year or so, maybe ‘surprise’ is the best way to describe it.   At first I felt a bit sad, I must admit, but that was quickly forgotten in favour of gratitude to a young actor who gave his all in what is, the most demanding acting role in television. We’ll always have a soft spot for Matt here at the fanzine - in those early days, way, way back in 2010, he was The Doctor who was up against a tidal wave of disgraceful abuse from some fans , whom tended to judge him on looks, videos of filming and the fact that he wasn’t David Tennant. BEFORE they even saw one of his episodes.   So naturally we (well most fans really, we won’t take credit that we don’t deserve) rallied behind him and the series, as it was those run of episodes that made us fall in love with Doctor Who all over again and start this mag.   And you know what? He ...

Issue 13 Download & Contribute to Issue 14

We're back and gearing up for a summer of being shut up in our bedrooms, typing out the same-old nonsense as we usually do. Like the typical Doctor Who fans we are. New Year - New Issues!

After a somewhat quiet Christmas, we're all set for a busy year of Doctor Who!  But like everyone in the UK at the moment, we're shit scared of the all the snow outside and we're even finding it difficult to sneak past hoards of snowmen so we can panic buy bread, milk and DWM's from the local supermarket. So with all that in mind, we're stuck on our computers and have decided to get on with this year's issues. We're looking for the usual 'anything to do with Doctor Who' scribblings, to be more specific however, we're mainly looking for reviews of the latest episode of Doctor Who, The Snowmen .  We need as many in-depth reviews as possible - positive, negative or both! So don't be put off if you don't share the general reaction, in fact, we'll love to hear as many different point of views as possible! Please make you reviews no more than 750 words and no less than 1. Any number between the two is also fine.  Seeing as it's the 50...

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS ISSUE IS NOW SOLD OUT After such a short run of Doctor Who this year, you'd think we won't have much to badger on about? Well, sadly, you'll be wrong, as here we present the biggest issue of the fanzine yet, weighing in at an unprecedented 56 pages !  It's so big, we've had offers from Celebrity Fit Club (lets face it - we're probably more famous than half of those people in the jungle with Colin Baker at the moment. And fatter)  If you're a fan of reading actual words, then this is the issue for you!  Due to the cost of producing these novels, we've only got a very limited run, so any support we get (i.e. if you buy one) will be greatly appreciated . Here is a list of the following stuff you will find in the latest issue: Reviews of Series 7.1 (or whatever you call it) Mary Tamm - The Key To The Key To Time The Doctor and The Ripper - what links The Doctor with Whitechapel's mysterious murderer? The Matt Smith Review: Part 20 - Closing Time

Image
What We First Thought: I love this just for the dig at Britain’s Got Talent. Fantastic! You know what? I’d never thought I’ll be using the words ‘ I quite fancy another helping of James Corden’ whilst doing these reviews.  I’m fiercely opposed to watching him in anything else, but the domestic life which has been fit around his character, Craig Owens, is like a nice pair of slippers – comfy to slip into from time-to-time.  I like how Gareth Roberts mirrors The Lodger , what with Craig repeating himself out loud when he opens the door to The Doctor and Sophie forgetting her keys, again! Even The Doctor gets in on the act, resurrecting the ‘baby talk’ gag that was first seen in A Good Man Goes To War .  And I do think it’s a gag on The Doctor’s part, some online fans do seem to get their knickers in a twist over the slightest thing these days!  They’re the exact type of people that would be ssshed by The Doctor’s sssshing!  Sometimes it’s nice to have ...

The Matt Smith Review: Part 19 - The God Complex

Image
What We First Thought: Is it next week yet? For some bizarre reason, Series 6 didn’t go down that well with most fans. What they produced, in my opinion, was a decent solid run of episodes that didn’t really contain the same highs and lows as any other new series to date.  I said in the fanzine at the time, that I didn’t think that the break worked as hoped – on paper, it seemed to be a good idea - the dramatic affect after A Good Man Goes To War was achieved as planned, but at times you can only build up something so much that the viewing public will create unrealistic expectations for themselves, so Let’s Kill Hitler and the rest of the series would never come up to scratch. This series is typified by The God Complex – a solid episode, with a spooky story that makes you think about, well, everything that you believe in.  It’s far better written than most of the stuff that the RTD era produced, but yet it doesn’t quite jump out at you, like the Minotaur the stor...

The Matt Smith Review: Part 18 - The Girl Who Waited

Image
What We First Thought: A MILF Amy. Really? One aspect I wanted to explore whilst watching all these episodes again was ‘ would I like them after enough time has passed' .   I generally watch an episode twice – once live and again later in the week.   If I REALLY enjoy the episode, I might watch it again. But then I leave it, perhaps for a couple of years or so.   I just don’t see the benefit of watching an episode 5 times in a short space of time, because in life you may be in a certain mood at the time or in a certain situation which may affect your enjoyment of a particular episode.   I didn’t really think The Girl Who Waited was brilliant, but now I think it’s easily one of the better episodes of the series. The Amy/Rory relationship actually makes sense in this episode.   It’s such a simple (or perhaps, not so simple) idea to have the dilemma of 'which Amy' to choose, but it works brilliantly as it opens up that window for us, to let us have a che...
